My students are a diverse group of amazing kids who have goals and aspirations just like most children. However, many struggle with the barriers of poverty, language acquisition, special needs and parents working very long hours. Some of our children have emotional needs and are living in homeless shelter motels that have recently opened in our area.
My high-poverty students strive to succeed, but are limited by the lack of resources available in our small public school environment.
We're trying hard to change that dynamic! Many of my students dream of becoming science and technology leaders. We have some serious-minded, talented students I am certain will master challenges that I would have trouble hurdling.
My students are a constant amazement. I endeavor to support their dreams to the best of my abilities. My kids are the hardest working group of individuals I've been given the joy of educating!
My Project
Sometimes it is the simplest of school supplies that hold a student back from being ready for learning starting the first day of school. My request is for simple necessities such as notebooks, pens, paper, post-it notes, and pencils for students to write notes about what they learned that day in class. Students will also be able to refer to those notes in their notebooks or any area in a book that they have used a paper clip, post-it note, or highlighted information they used in order to study for a test or to write up a project reflecting on what they’ve learned.
Some children come to school without these most basic supplies.
Having notebooks, pens, and pencils to give to students will eliminate any unnecessary anxiety for the child because they don’t have the school supplies they need for learning purposes.
Demonstrating their learning often involves creating colorful projects, which is where colored paper, gel pens, markers, and crayons, so that they can demonstrate their understanding creatively. Paper clips are necessary to hold their work together.
