The first thing my students notice when they walk into my classroom is the wall of books that makes up my classroom library. I have worked hard over the past five years to accumulate books that will help my students become life-long readers. When they come to me, many are self-proclaimed non-readers.
My students are fantastically diverse 8th graders in a Title l urban district.
Over 75% of them are on free and reduced-price lunch and do not have access to books outside of school.
My Project
This project aims to put more books into my classroom library that represent the diversity of students in my classroom. It is imperative that my students see themselves and their classmates in the books they choose to read.
I strongly believe books should be both windows and mirrors for my students, meaning students should be able to see the experience of others as well as glimpses of themselves in the characters and experiences in their choice reading books.
If funded, this project will put 19 more books into my classroom library that will help students experience the rich diversity of their classmates as well as to see themselves represented in literature.
