I teach special education preschool in a public elementary school. My students are 2-5 years old and have a wide range of abilities. We are a Title I school and the majority of my students come from low income homes. More than half of my students have disabilities, including developmental delays, Autism, ADHD, Sensory Processing Disorder and anxiety disorders. Because my students' needs are so diverse, differentiation and a wide range of age appropriate materials are critical to their success.
Despite all of the challenges they face each day, my students are the sweetest children in the world and they deserve the very best!
I want to provide a quality learning environment and help them develop the essential skills they will need for kindergarten and on. This means addressing all domains of their development, most importantly social/emotional skills, self-regulation and self-awareness.
My Project
No more skill and drill! Gone are the days of tracing letters over and over! Young children need fun and engaging activities to spark curiosity and learning. My students will use clipboards and fun pens and markers to "write the room" as they explore our school, writing what they see. They will write during learning centers as they engage in restaurant centers and a pretend grocery store. These fun writing instruments will provide experiences with different mediums, colors and textures. The multicultural markers will allow students to create realistic self portraits, as well as learn about acceptance.
More than half of the students in my class have special needs, including ADHD, Developmental Delays, Sensory Integration Disorder and Autism.
Materials like pencil grips, thick markers and stencils can help improve the fine motor skills these students need to learn to write. Please consider a donation to help provide these quality materials for my amazing students!
