This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember tinkering, playing, discovering, and learning by taking things apart or fixing them??? How about just using your imagination to make up something or create your own invention?

So, many of my students don't get the chance to ”play” or “build” or even have the tools to use their imaginations or to even “fail!” That is what I want for my students, I want to create a MAKERSPACE and let them problem solve, tinker, create, collaborate, and who knows teach them how to use some tools!!

I hope to help get my students can become life-long learners and learn from the world around them.

Let me give you a brief description of my 4th grade classroom and school. Our school is in a high-poverty, low social economic area with 91% of our school receiving free or reduced priced breakfast and lunch. The demographics are: 86% Hispanic, 7% African-American, 6% Caucasian, 1% Other. 57% of our students are English Language Learners. Only about 22% of our parents have taken a college/vocational class and about 4% have a college degree.

My Project

We are requesting the basics to start a MakersSpace for my students. MakerSpaces are a place for students to create and tinker. My students don't have much of a chance to be creative or use their imaginations to build or fix things. The tools and supplies being requested range from basic tools, cutting tools, adhesives, electronics and other supplies.

These items will enable the students to tinker and create tangible objects or creations to take home and/or use for a project.

They will be able to get those creative juices flowing and use the design process to design, test, redesign, test again, and eventually come up with a final product. They will learn about the design process and go beyond the scientific method of a basic science project. They will learn about engineering and hopefully some reverse engineering.

The MakerSpace will also be used in the regular classroom to build and design some other basic structures like dwellings or even characters from novels we are reading or create story books with led diodes in between pages to incorporate into their creative stories. Another project I would like to do is creating a tool or device to make their or family’s life easier.

This is part of the big STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) Movement. These students will learn about safety, how to use tools properly, and design/build many things.

The first goal is to have The MakerSpace as an after school club and ultimately the goal will be to branch out to a lunch time club also. I hope to continue this project year after year and grow the tools and projects.

This project was created in with a simple goal in mind; kids who create things will take more ownership,use their imaginations and think outside the box!
