Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students and families speak Spanish, Mam, Tongan, Arabic, Tagalog, Karen, Karenni, Nepali and Chinese. Since 45% of our students are English Language Learners, we have a rich academic program to meet their language needs. Our newcomer program serves up to forty students in our community who have moved here in the last year and speak little English. We also have a rich African American student population that thrives at our school.
Our students reflect the neighborhood's diverse immigrant and minority populations.
Throughout the year, we have cultural celebrations to celebrate the histories, cultures, and accomplishments of our diverse student population. While 96% of our students are socioeconomically disadvantaged, we are rich in so many ways.
My Project
As always, one of my favorite things about Donors Choose is how specific it is to our students and their wants and needs! I always have a list of books that students have created and added to - the love that they can request books and read their favorites!
Having access to books is important, as well as the content - like LGBTQ!
I have many students in my class and in our school that are LGTBQ and they deserve to have reading materials that reflect their views! We also would like to have some books about California as well as a few more books specifically requested by students (like the series you see below!). I love that my students are reading - this is so IMPORTANT in their educational careers and beyond!
