Help me give my students a class set of the amazing novels; "Ghost" and "Long Way Down," by Jason Reynolds.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
As a teacher/ librarian in an urban charter elementary school, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. 98% of those students receive free or reduced price lunch. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide our students with a rich and meaningful learning experience in my classroom.
My students are curious, smart, and creative consumers of education.
They love to read and I am so grateful to be able to introduce them to a plethora of amazing children's literature.
"If I can write a book in my natural voice and somebody reads that, and for the first time, sees their voice upheld as a piece of capital L, literature. There's power there...in mere representation and acknowledgement of something that has not been acknowledged." -Jason Reynolds
Allowing my students to experience a book written in a voice that is similar to theirs is a special experience, giving them each a copy of "Ghost" or "Long Way Down" will make that experience even better.
You probably remember what it felt like to pick up a book that "spoke" to you as a child. I want to give my students that experience. They love reading and I love sharing high quality literature with them, but there is something amazing about actually holding that novel in your hands.
I want to give my students the opportunity to each hold a copy of these amazing books, that feature characters and stories that my students can relate to. It is difficult to find a book that engages an entire class of students, but Jason Reynold's books "Ghost" and "Long Way Down," do just that. My students currently pile around the 5 worn copies they share as I read, and I want them to be able to really engage with the texts as we read together.
