Help me give my students the classic games of Monopoly and Ticket To Ride to engage them in financial and economic thinking and introduce them to trade, negotiation, and strategic decisions.

My Students

Our students are 11-12 year olds who love to try new things. They are curious, humorous, shy, excited, and full of energy - all the things you would expect from a middle school classroom. Our students live in small town America with many having never traveled outside of the state. Many of our students come from low-income households and have not had much experience managing money or thinking about financial or economic concepts.

These kids love to play games and have competitions with each other, they don't even know they are learning.

We have had a blast playing board games, role-playing games, and review games in the past and they are always asking what new game we'll play next.

My Project

We love to use games in the classroom because they facilitate learning without placing pressure on the students. We can teach many educational skills such as economics, geography, and math without the students even knowing they are learning. Soft skills like negotiation and collaboration are also practiced with these games.

Best of all, struggling learners will engage the class, content, and target skills to play a game, when otherwise they would be intimidated with "traditional" teaching methods.

We have had success with the Catan games and card games in the past for review and social skill. We want to use Monopoly to teach economic and financial concepts while using Ticket To Ride to teach basic geography and strategic thinking skills.
