My students need 4 ASUS Chromebooks to build their digital portfolios on Google Suite. They will use the Chromebooks to finalize and publicize (to their class) their final drafts of essays, projects, and assessments.
My students in Brooklyn are from diverse backgrounds. They are eager readers and writers of the 21st century. The stories they read and write come alive, not only from written texts but also from media text (e.g., social media and the like). Our school uses the Mood Meter based on R.U.L.E.R. component from Yale University that helps us enhance our learning in the classroom by focusing on social-emotional learning.
In our school, we put our students' character first which then join hands with our content that we teach.
When we put our students' emotions first, we build trust, empathy, and loyalty within our community of learners.
Our readers and writers are our leaders of tomorrow. They are our convincers of the present and our future. Our students use their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills to build a better future for themselves, their families and their local communities.
My Project
Our students will use laptops to create their digital portfolios. They will be using them to self-assess and peer-assess each other's classwork and assignments. Through using laptops, our students will truly learn the value of sharing the materials in the classroom. This helps my students who also do not have access to laptops or the Internet in their own homes. It is imperative to teach them skills that are associated with ELA and the technological world that involve the Common Core Standards: reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Writing in the digital world is a skill our students will have to practice and master over time.
If our students can start by adapting their skills early on in middle school, then they can surely succeed in the later grades. They can catch their writing errors early on, without a "spell-check" by practicing their writing constantly, even if it's on a laptop. Our students deserve every bit of digital competency in and outside of the classroom.
Our units in the curriculum we use embody a lot of social and political concerns as well as social-emotional learning. Our literary units focus on social justice and social-emotional concerns in the world as well as in their local homes. The laptops will allow them to conduct research and delineate between various research texts to enhance their arguments when writing narrative and persuasive essays.
