Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The vast majority of our amazing 3rd graders come from low-income households. They receive free or reduced-price lunch. Many of these children lack a quiet place to do their schoolwork or have responsibilities at home that make it difficult for them to function at one hundred percent when they come to school. Yes, 8 and 9-year-old students from our school often live like this. This was the case before Hurricane Harvey and before the COVID-19 shutdown, and now it may be even more difficult for many of them. Somehow, these wonderful students still manage to come to school online or in-person with a smile and hug to give.
My Project
This school year teachers and students face challenges unlike before. For lower-income students such as mine, who were already behind the starting line, the challenges are even greater to keep up during this pandemic. This year, and even before the pandemic, the majority of my students were unable to bring or purchase bare essentials for school.
Having school supplies at home and/or in class should be the least of their worries as they try to succeed virtually and/or face-to-face.
I teach both, sometimes even at the same time. I need my students to have supplies for school but also at home if we shut down due to COVID-19. This project provides durable folders, highlighters, grammar pencils, and other materials.
