Every child deserves a chance to succeed in school. However, children with special needs often face additional challenges compared to their peers. For the second year in a row, I am the special education teacher in a 4th grade co-taught classroom with a general ed teacher. Each day we plan and implement lessons that play to our students' strengths and learning styles. Our class consists of students with disabilities (learning disabilities, ADHD, Autism, speech and language impairments etc.) and typically developing children.
Many children on my caseload have weaknesses in the areas of decoding, encoding, phonological awareness, retrieval and application of high frequency/sight words, fluency, and comprehension.
Despite these challenges, my students persevere and always try to do their best.
My Project
As a Special Education and Certified Wilson Teacher, this project will enhance my teaching by allowing me to learn directly from Barbara Wilson, the creator of all multisensory Wilson programs, who will be presenting the upcoming release of the 4th Edition of the Wilson Reading System (WRS). By attending this conference, I will better understand the new thinking behind the revisions, and help ensure a smooth transition while optimizing student gains as we move from the current 3rd edition to the new 4th edition of WRS.
This project will promote student learning by addressing IEP goals relating to phonological awareness, decoding, encoding, fluency and mastering high frequency words, which are topics to be covered at the conference.
Also, I will acquire new knowledge about how the relationship between phonology, morphology and orthography impact student growth, progress within WRS lessons, and overall literacy success for all students.
