Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My co-teacher and I teach two 4th grade Dual Language (Spanish and English) classes. We have a total of 56 students who all live in a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood within the diversity of New York City. Many come from low-income families and have little to no access to technology at home!

Our students come to school ready to learn and engage in meaningful experiences but with COVID-19, they are all at home and for some, with nothing to connect them to their teachers.

With schools closed for safety, we have resorted to remote teaching. We and our students are learning how to work together online. Many students are home with nothing. For other families, there are multiple children and only one device. Many of our students are working off cell phones! How are we able to provide the best instruction we can through a cell phone? How can our students properly receive instruction through a cell phone?

My Project

With schools being closed, it breaks our hearts to be separated and disconnected from our 56 students. Although we are happy they are all safe at home, many of them have little or no access to technology. We are trying to connect as much as possible with our students through instruction on Google Classroom. We want them to have the least amount of interruption to their education while we are all away from school. We are asking for these laptops so that our students can access the material we are teaching online and stay connected with us during this difficult time!
