Help me give my students the opportunity to complete a novel study over the critically acclaimed novel, Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
At our South Georgia middle school, we teach, mentor, and coach our student-athletes to not only win on the court but to also win in the classroom. Encouraging our student-athletes to be servant leaders, alongside being the change that we wish to see in the world, are qualities that we wish to instill in our student-athletes on a daily basis.
Our studentT-athletes come from diverse backgrounds, but when they come together they form a family that creates a cooperative learning community that is committed to excellence and success in all that they do.
Even through their differences, our student-athletes share a deep commitment to leading, challenging, and motivating each other to succeed in all that they do.
This project will afford our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade girls and boys basketball student-athletes with the opportunity to learn the values of empathy, equity, and the relentless pursuit of JUSTICE for ALL.
It is our goal for our middle school girls and boys basketball teams to complete a team novel study using the Young Adult novel, Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson, during our seasons.
In conjunction with the novel, our student-athletes will complete relevant standards-based activities such as: collaborative team discussions, oral and written self-reflections, and working with community leaders to create a plan of action that identifies solutions for a social issue plaguing our community.
By completing this novel study, we hope to foster a team culture that promotes: literacy, giving a voice to the unheard, and taking a stand for for what we believe in.
