My students need a paper trimmer, storage and diverse texts that will serve as mirrors for some, with characters and experiences that reflect what they know, but also as windows to others, helping them see beyond their own life experiences.
My creative students come to sixth grade with a wide variety of reading levels and interests. Some are enthusiastic readers looking for challenge and variety. Some are reluctant readers who are looking for that just right book that will peak their interest.
My 6th graders are eager to get the most out of their English block periods, especially during independent reading time, but thankfully I have many different readers in my classroom who all are looking for and need different things.
My Project
"It's not just kids of color, kids from the margins who need diverse literature and media. It's all kids who need all stories about all kinds of people.” Dr. Ebony Elizabeth Thomas @Ebonyteach. The six texts I chose for this project reflect very different stories, but they also reflect very universal themes and the struggles of feeling different and overcoming challenges. That's something that I think all students need in their classroom library.
My students need these resources to grow in their understanding of themselves and all others.
They also need resources to keep track of their thinking, with sticky notes, and to share their thinking with others. The Write Thing: Kwame Alexander Engages Students in Writing Workshop (And You Can Too!) is a professional text that I think will help me to better engage students to use their writing to communicate their ideas and their experiences. The storage bins will help me to keep all of these new and wonderful resources organized and accessible.
I think these resources will truly make a difference to my sixth graders who are trying to understand themselves and the world.
