Help me give my students a science-based outdoor educational experience that will give them the chance to enjoy nature with a focus on environmental stewardship and experiential learning.
This group of 5th graders loves excitement! They are full of energy and eager to engage with the world around them, and for this reason they LOVE Science! They are inquisitive and FULL of questions, and they will do what it takes to figure out the answers.
We are nestled in the heart of Austin.
It's close to the bustle of the city, but feels like a small town. This is accomplished by lots of parents, neighbors, and community members who meet and interact like family. This way of life is passed on to their children who attend our school. Many have grown up together, and they all take care of each other.
Their strength comes from their diversity. Children from different backgrounds and socio-economic statuses treat each other as equals. This commitment to each other is reflected in our morning announcements where they recite the school motto, "I was born to make a difference."
My Project
This is an opportunity for our elementary fifth grade students to enjoy a unique experience in natural surroundings. The students will spend two days attending classes that are grounded in natural science and use Texas Essential Knowledge objectives as a guide to instruction. In addition they will take classes that include personal growth opportunities through group team-building, a high ropes course and an overnight camping stay few urban students have the opportunity to experience.
Students who have attended the camp in the past have returned with a universal respect for all living things, a leap in self-confidence, experiential knowledge of science concepts and better intrapersonal skills used during group work.
