This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Each one of our students receives free breakfast and lunch here at our school, but many times, it's not enough to fill the growing stomach of these active boys and girls! Despite the hardships that may make up their daily lives, they are amazing! Creative, hardworking, eager to learn; each of them bring something different to the table. They have a thirst for knowledge that comes from their different worlds and I am bound to give it to them and expose them to new worlds! Let's be honest: when you're physically hungry, even just a little, it can be hard to focus on a task at hand. Their health really is their wealth and it directly impacts the quality of their learning. These students are hungry for knowledge and for the tools they need to change the world for the better, and I can't let not having tools and resources stand in their way!
My Project
I recently attended the Maker Educator Collective Boot Camp 2018 as part of the Infosys Pathfinders Program. In the Maker Movement, students are asked to innovate, create, and problem solve. They are asked to design, write, present, and eventually to produce a product. Learning in the classroom comes to life when kids are up out of their chairs and actively engaged in activities and learning becomes fun; an adventure, a creative outlet, something they invest in and want to do.
My classroom maker education and educational maker space leads to determination, independence and creative problem solving, and an authentic preparation for the real world through simulating real-world challenges--in short, this educational maker space is less of a classroom and more of a motivational speech without words.
