Help me give my students individual copies of our first novel of the year, Bud, Not Buddy, so that they may read independently and prepare for our online assignments and class discussions.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a school in Baltimore City where all students receive free lunch and approximately sixty percent are learning English as a second language.
My 6th-grade students come from diverse backgrounds, including many immigrant families.
Many of the students are newcomers to this country, just beginning the difficult process of acclimating to a new culture and language. Many come with gaps in their education, interrupted or limited formal schooling, or even illiteracy in their first language. At home, students may speak Spanish, Arabic, Greek, or one of many other languages.
They deserve the necessary resources to help them make the most of their time during distance learning. My students are curious and energetic. I want to ensure that they have what they need to be successful during a challenging time.
My Project
It is difficult to imagine starting school without even stepping into an actual classroom, but that is the reality we may be facing in the fall.
My students' lives have been filled with change, uncertainty and at times, fear.
My job is to make this upcoming school year feel as normal as possible. Sixth grade is the first year of middle school and signifies greater independence and more challenging work.
Please help me give my students novels and materials for distance learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our first novel of the school year is Bud, Not Buddy, by Christopher Paul Curtis.
In an effort to make our distance learning as seamless as possible, I would like for each student to have their own copy of the text. Individual copies will allow me to better differentiate the online lessons and to meet the needs of individual students.
Students will be able to annotate the text in preparation for our online discussions and assignments. Their notes will assist in their comprehension of the plot and the setting of the text.
