The K-5 students in our school are a very diverse group of hard-working students. They come from a very disadvantaged neighborhood; we have about ninety-nine percent of our students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.
While they may not have all the materials they need, they have a faculty that supports them and a close-knit community that loves them.
We all band together to ensure their education encompasses both academics and citizenship.
My Project
Our school works hard to strengthen the social and emotional skills of our students in order to create an environment of compassion within our classrooms and hallways. We use utilize a special social skills program to explicitly teach coping strategies and social skills.
It with these skills that we are leveling the playing field of our most disadvantaged students as they become more confident in themselves and learn appropriate ways to support each other.
These skills also transfer into building more inclusive and equitable learning. Whenever students are "caught" using these skills they can earn classroom rewards. We keep the rewards within the realm of classroom supplies in an effort for them to see how their skills help them achieve more academically.
