Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a great bunch. They are the cream of the crop - magnet students selected from a pool of applicants containing some of the best students in the county. Among them are gifted students who have their own set of special needs. My students are smart, witty, funny, and above all BRIGHT. They are inquisitive, critical, and imaginative.
As part of the magnet program, we do many creative projects and collaborate with other subject areas.
The students in our program rely on technology and materials that they do not always have access to. We are an International Baccalaureate magnet, so our students are exposed to cultural experiences that many young people in an urban setting do not normally see. The majority of students in our school are on free/reduced lunch, and any opportunity to enhance their education with new materials that they may otherwise not have access to is greatly appreciated.
Being an IB program, one goal is to help students find their "voice," so the opportunity to publish and broadcast to an international audience is critical for developing students who are ready for the world.
My Project
We have been podcasting in our class this year, and so far we have produced 4 episodes and the students are really responding positively. We have lively discussions about our subject matter (Language and Literature), as well as middle school life, and finding their voice. We have been recording episodes on my cell phone, and while the quality is not terrible, having a more professional setup would go a long way toward improving the quality of our final product and giving students ownership over the project. As opposed to speaking at a cell phone in the middle of a table, students would have their own microphone and would become more engaged in the process.
Seeing students' eyes light up when they ask, "Is it Podcast Friday?" has been so rewarding!
Each week, I try to feature different class groupings, and rotate the students involved in the episode so that everyone gets a chance to participate. I have been running this project with items I already owned (laptop, cell phone, free editing software, music kindly donated with permission from the artist or under Creative Commons licensing), and I would love this piece of professional equipment to make the project more real for the students. I am now paying out of pocket for the hosting on Soundcloud, so your donation would help immensely to continue this project!
I choose this particular equipment package because I have read good reviews on the recorder, and the addition of the four microphones is perfect for our needs in the classroom. It is reasonably priced and probably what I would buy myself if I did not create this Donors Choose project. Thank you for your consideration.
