Help me give my students 18 "You Choose" library bound, hardcover books. These books have multiple endings that encourage rereading and critical thinking. Some of the topics are tied to curriculum, some are simply high interest.
As the school library media coordinator at an elementary school, I work with approximately 650 students in grades K-5 on a year round schedule. These students are primarily from the Cary, North Carolina area, although we have a growing population of students from South East Raleigh. These children come from various walks of life, but they all have something in common.
These students are curious!
They come to the library in the morning during open circulation and they are excited to start their day checking out books. They rush to the "reader favorites" section to see if we have the latest Dog Man or a new WhoHQ book. They dig through the book bin to see what has recently been returned. They scour the shelves to find graphic novels. Many of them love to read and explore new ideas.
My Project
The "You Choose" books purchased through this grant will be used specifically to support the 4th grade EL Education Curriculum. Students will be required to create their own 'choose your own adventure' story as part of their animal adaptations and defense mechanisms unit. These books will serve as inspiration and give them the background knowledge necessary to help them format their own stories.
Furthermore, these books will be incorporated into the library's collection for all students to enjoy.
We already have one "You Choose" book and it has circulated 8 times in the year that we've owned it. These are high interest books that engage even the most reluctant of readers.
