Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are creative, thoughtful and resilient. They are eager to learn English. They come to school each day ready to be challenged in order to grow both personally and academically. They are truly inspiring!

Each student embraces the challenges of learning English.

They are inquisitive, compassionate, and creative. I work with middle and high school English language learners in a rural area. Many of my students are newcomers who speak very little English.

Books are so important to my students and are truly valued. Providing culturally relevant, quality literature is crucial to accessing their prior knowledge. We want to instill a love of reading and lifelong literacy for all our students.

My Project

My students need novels that are culturally relevant to spark an interest in reading. Students in my classroom are at various levels of learning English. They are very reluctant to read, so I would like to do a book study on The Only Road that will hold their interest and inspire them to read beyond the classroom.

Reading about characters that reflect their culture will motivate them to read and inspire a love of books.

Many of our students lack basic literacy skills and have never read a novel. They need high interest, culturally relevant literature to spark their interest and motivate learning. I want them to be excited about the world of possibilities that becoming a good reader bestows.
